How does location tracking work in the background?

NewRoads utilizes Apple’s CoreLocation framework to update your travel path in the background. If you grant "Always Allow" location permissions, the app will log your travel even when your iPhone screen is turned off or you are utilizing other apps.

Does the app drain battery?

We have engineered our background tracking service to be highly efficient. It uses native Apple hardware-accelerated movement detection to suspend GPS updates when you are stationary and resume them when you are on the move, minimizing unnecessary power drain.

Is my location data uploaded to any servers?

No. Your privacy is paramount. Your entire journey history, explored coordinates, and manual path reveals are stored entirely on your iPhone using Apple’s local SwiftData framework. We do not operate remote databases containing your location tracks.

How do I cancel or restore my NewRoads Pro subscription?

NewRoads Pro subscriptions are managed securely by Apple. To cancel or modify your plan, go to your iPhone's **Settings App** -> **Tap your name at the top** -> **Subscriptions** -> **NewRoads**. To restore an active purchase (e.g. after switching to a new phone), open NewRoads, navigate to the Pro paywall screen, and tap **"Restore Purchases"**.

Why did a path not reveal on the map?

This is typically caused by one of two factors:

  • Location Access: Make sure location access is set to **"Always"** in your iPhone Settings -> NewRoads -> Location. Setting it to "While Using" will prevent background logging.
  • GPS reception: Deep canyons, tunnels, or tall city buildings can temporarily disrupt GPS reception, preventing accurate coordinate tracking.
